Preparing for an End-of-Life Pet Photography Session
Preparing for an End-of-Life Photography Session for Dog Parents
End-of-life pet photography sessions, which go by many names: “rainbow sessions”, “celebration of life sessions”, or “memory sessions”, are a heartfelt way to capture the final moments with your beloved pet.
These Barking Dog Images sessions hold immense emotional significance, allowing pet parents to create lasting memories that honor the bond shared with their furry family members. As a dog parent, preparing for such a session involves both practical and emotional steps.
This guide aims to help you navigate the process, ensuring that you and your dog are ready to make the most of this precious time together. I will cover how to prepare emotionally, what to wear and helpful beauty products to consider, how to get your dog ready, capturing special moments, and coping with grief after the session. Together we can create a meaningful and memorable experience that celebrates the life and love you share with your dog.

Preparing Emotionally for the Session
Acknowledging Emotions
It’s natural to feel a range of emotions as you prepare for losing a loved pet. Acknowledge your feelings, whether they are sadness (including anticipatory grief of the loss), relief, or a mixture of both.
Understanding that these emotions are ALL valid is the first step towards emotional readiness, and readiness to engage in your end-of-life dog photography session.
Planning with Family and Friends
It might feel like it’s been a while since you’ve had something to look forward to – but here it is! Discussing the upcoming session with family and friends can provide a sort of emotional support.
Share your thoughts and plans for your end-of-life pet photography session, and let them offer their ideas. For example, maybe your friend will remember your dog’s favorite toy as a puppy and suggest a photo with it, or your spouse will have a great idea for capturing your dog’s love of water.
This can help you feel less alone in your grief and have something positive to look forward to with your pet.
Seeking support for grief
If the upcoming loss is weighing heavily on you, joining pet loss support groups, either online or in-person, can be incredibly beneficial. There are also other resources out there for pet loss grief. WVRC in Waukesha has a great resource here, and also supports a completely FREE monthly pet loss support group through Red Oak Counseling LLC: https://wvrcwaukesha.ethosvet.com/grief-resources/
These groups offer a safe space to express your feelings and connect with others who understand what you’re going through. They can provide comfort and advice on how to cope with the emotional aspects of the session.

What to Wear and Beauty Products
Wear comfortable clothing and watch out for patterns
I recommend the same guidelines I do for my signature photography sessions for your end-of-life pet photography session, with a few exceptions. If your pet is no longer very mobile, you might end up sitting on a dog bed or floor next to them for the photos, so wear clothes that are comfortable and well-fitting in a seated position.
In addition, patterned clothing often looks distracting in black and white. Since I edit photos from the end-of-life sessions in both color and black and white, it might be best to avoid pattered clothing.
Makeup and beauty tips
If you choose to wear makeup, opt for a minimal and natural look. End-of-life pet photography sessions might trigger tears (or sometimes we are laughing the entire time – it can be whatever you make it!) so waterproof mascara is a MUST. Choose long-lasting products and use a primer base and setting spray on top.
Eye-drops that reduce redness in the eyes can help with red eyes, and a cooling eye cream or eye patches before the shoot can reduce puffiness. These amazon eye patches are a good choice!
In addition, your hands will be in a few photos such as holding your dog’s paw, rubbing their head, and patting their back. If you don’t want a full manicure, make sure your nails and jewelry are clean, and remove fitness watches and hair binders before the shoot. A manicure could be a great stress reliever, though!

Preparing Your Pet for the Session
Ensuring comfort
Your dog’s comfort is the most important thing during your end-of-life pet photography session. We have already chosen a location that they will be most comfortable in, but there are a few more things we can do to make sure they feel the best that they can during the session itself.
Ensure they have eaten (if they have an appetite), hydrated, and have taken any necessary medications, including pain medication if it helps them.
Barking Dog Images sessions have no time limit – we can finish as slowly or as quickly as you and your pet would like.
Grooming tips
If possible, give your dog a gentle grooming session before the photography session. A full de-shed is not necessary – simply brushing the outside layer of their fur to remove tangles and dirt is enough to look great in the photos.
If they enjoy baths, consider giving them one a day or two before the session (if you do it right before, it might make them too tired). Trimming nails (and grinch paws) is nice for their close-up paw photos, but it is not required if it stresses them out.
Collars and leashes
If we are taking photos inside your home in your backyard, your dog or cat might not need to be on a collar or leash.
But, if you have a collar and/or leash that is special to you or want to take a walk outside, make sure they are clean before the shoot. Remove extraneous tags (such as rabies) to streamline the look.
Treats and toys
Your dog might not have an appetite near the end of their life, but if they do I love to reward them for a modeling job well done with their favorite treat! Especially if your dog has a special diet or food allergy, please have food handy for the session.
If your dog has a favorite or special toy please bring it to use as a motivator and/or in the photos (see below).

Capturing Special Moments
Special shots
When planning your end-of-life photography session, it’s important to communicate to me if there is a special shot that you are envisioning during your session. I have a standard list of shots I aim to get with each family and pet, but I always want to suit your vision.
Does your dog have a spot on their nose? Maybe your cat flicks her tail a certain way that you love? Or your horse has a quirky ear? These details will make your photos unique and meaningful.
Feel free to send me inspiration via screenshots or Pinterest posts anytime! I never want to directly copy another photographer’s work, but we can take inspiration from a certain pose or concept.
Using props and accessories
Props and accessories can add a special touch to your photos.
Consider using items that are meaningful to your dog, such as their favorite blanket or bed, a cherished toy, or a collar with their name. These props can help tell the story of your dog’s life and create priceless memories from the session.
Incorporating favorite activities
Photographing your dog engaging in their favorite activities can capture the joy and vibrancy of their life.
Whether it’s a game of fetch, a swim in the lake, a belly rub on the couch, or gobbling a drive-through cheeseburger, these moments will highlight the unique happiness your dog has brought into your life.
